On August 2nd, Zomba District celebrated the Day of the African Child with a localized theme of "Promoting Quality Inclusive Education for All Children in Zomba." This significant event highlighted the importance of inclusive education and the transformative power it holds for the community.
One of the standout moments was the heartfelt testimony shared by AGE Africa scholar, Colleta Mpaso. Colleta, who is set to attend Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES) to study Bachelor of Physiotherapy, spoke passionately about how the scholarship and life skills support she received during her four years at St. Mary’s Secondary School changed her life.
In her speech, Colleta expressed deep gratitude for the scholarship that allowed her to focus on her studies. "When I was selected to St. Mary’s Secondary School, I had mixed feelings. I was thrilled to attend my dream school, but I feared dropping out due to lack of school fees. AGE Africa came to my rescue, which motivated me to work hard. As a result, I scored 14 points and am now on my way to achieving my dream of becoming a doctor," she shared.
Colleta used her platform to inspire her peers. "To all the boys and girls, regardless of your background, I urge you to work hard. Remember, organizations like AGE Africa are here to support us. Say no to early marriage and remain focused on your education. Parents, please do not force your daughters into child marriages to alleviate financial burdens. Encouraging them to excel in school can help change our future for the better," she passionately appealed.
The District Council Chairperson, Bastar Chirwa, also commended AGE Africa for their comprehensive support. "I am pleased to see that in the past three academic years, none of your scholars have dropped out. Your multifaceted interventions, including the CHATS sessions that build life skills, are addressing the challenges that often lead to school dropouts. This holistic approach is truly unique," he remarked.
The Day of the African Child is commemorated annually, and this year’s theme was "Education for All Children in Africa: The Time is Now." The celebration in Zomba was a powerful reminder of the collective effort required to promote quality inclusive education and the profound impact it can have on the lives of young people.
